General Setup Information

Dialup users get two accounts - one for dialup access and one for email. We typically set up both accounts to have the same name and password. Account names are always in all lower-case. Both account names and passwords are case-sensitive. Email addresses (username@transbay.net) are not case-sensitive, so username@transbay.net and USERNAME@TRANSBAY.NET are the same address.

Calling to a different area code does not necessarily mean the call is a toll call. If you have any doubt about your call being a toll call, consult your local telephone company to confirm which numbers are local calls. The dialup service should never return a busy signal. If it does, you can try another (local) number. If trouble persists, let us know.

The dialup connection should be specified as:

  • dynamically assigned IP address
  • use gateway on remote side
  • header compression okay
  • disable LCP extensions (if applicable)
  • specify DNS servers - primary is 207.238.132.2, secondary is 207.238.134.2

Dialup users access Usenet News (newsgroups) using the server "pnews.transbay.net", giving their username as "username@transbay.net" and using the same password as for the dialup.

Mail and News Servers

If your user ID is "username", then your email address is "username@transbay.net".
Our servers:
  • SMTP server (outbound mail): mail.transbay.net
  • POP3 server (mail retrieval): mail.transbay.net
  • IMAP server (mail retrieval): mail.transbay.net
  • News servers: pnews.transbay.net for dialup users, news.transbay.net for everyone else.

If you access our SMTP server from a foreign network (e.g. Comcast, AT&T), you'll need to specify:
(1) use port 587 instead of port 25;
(2) Turn ON "authentication": Mozilla calls this "use username and password", Outlook calls it "server requires authentication". Specify your username in the field supplied.
(3) Only TLS encryption is offered. You can specify "Use TLS" or "Use TLS if available", but "SSL" is not yet supported. If your program can't do TLS (and so far Outlook cannot) then you will not be able to use encryption.

DNS (Domain Name Service) Servers

Primary DNS: 207.238.132.2 (dns1.transbay.net)
Secondary DNS: 207.238.134.2 (dns2.transbay.net)
